The only mishap of the day involved Ava in the IRC 2 division, chartered by Joost van der Post, who managed to find an isolated rock some 100m or so off the northern end of Koh Bon.

‘There was another boat about 50m closer to shore than us, so we never thought we were too close in, and we hit the rock,’ said van der Post. The collision put a very substantial crack in the plywood hull, and Ava started taking on water very fast.

Skipper and crew quickly grounded the sinking boat on the nearest beach and further salvage operations will be taking place over the next couple of days. All the crew were taken off safely by media boats following the race and there were no injuries.

Sinking brings drama to Race Week

PHUKET: Westerly winds of eight knots provided exciting sailing on the first dayof the 2005 Evason Phuket Race Week, producing some thrills and spills among the fleet of 29 boats competing – and even a sinking.

Ava, in the IRC 2 Class, was trying to get out of dirty air from La Samudra when she hit a rock, holing the hull and forcing the crew of four to put out a Mayday and head immediately for shallow water. She sank in 1.5 meters of water. No one was hurt in the incident, and work on salvaging the 20-year-old wooden yacht was quickly under way.

One unlucky competitor was Dutchman, Joost Van Der Post, who bumped the rocks off Ko Bon on his chartered Ava, that cracked the hull and started to uncontrollably take in water. A quick decision was made to beach the vessel on Ko Bon and the sailors taken off safely. Retrieval efforts are expected to swing into action later today.

Journos rescue Ava and crew

Published on Jul 29, 2005

[SAILING] Journalists on the media boat came to the rescue of a sinking yacht and helped four sailors to safety during the first day of the Evason Phuket Raceweek off the southern tip of the resort island yesterday.

Racing class yacht Ava, skippered by experienced Dutch sailor Joost Van Der Post and with three-time world champion Moth sailor David Aszatt of England as one of the crew, struck a rock as they rounded Bon Bon island about one mile offshore during the first race yesterday. The 20-year-old wooden yacht quickly started taking in water as the crew of two Dutchmen, one Englishman and a French woman sent out mayday calls and turned the stricken boat towards the nearest land, the uninhabited Bon Bon island.

The nearby media boat sped to the rescue and managed to help the yacht, which was dangerously close to sinking, beach itself about 20 metres off the island. The journalists on the media boat were able to get the crew off the boat and safely back to dry land.

Ava, the boat which hit a rock and almost sunk on the first day, was yesterday towed into deeper water and allowed to sink to minimize the damage which might have occurred if it had been left wallowing in the shallow surf on Bon island.
