History:
Sailing as a sport was none existing in Jepara when a relative young Dutchman set foot ashore some fourteen years back.
He quickly bought a teak fishing prahu and converted that to a sailing boat including a NASA profile centreboard (made of teak of course) and a retractable spade-rudder.
The launching party was a success with champagne flown in from Jakarta, but the maiden trip was a disaster.
The severely over-canvassed boat sunk in front partying guests. The five man strong drum band saw its drums floating in the Jawasea were as others lost cameras, sunglasses, house keys etc. The Dutch owner settled his reputation at once. He used this boat ‘The DARA MANUSKU’ (sweet little virgin) to explore the Jawa shores for years
It was the beginning of the Jeparadise Sailing Club.
In a town as Jepara, sailing is considered a poor men’s job as you obviously cannot afford an engine. Our fishermen, that came to rescue from day one, consider those sunburned
foreigners as totally mad.
Growing:
More boats came as others bought derelict Hobie’s from Bali resorts and restored them.
Newly imported boats arrived from Holland and good old DARA MANISKU is rotting away at the clubhouse’s yard as sweet memory of the club’s start.
Centre of activity is Bandugan beach which, during colonial rule, was called ‘Klein Scheveningen’ after the famous Dutch North Sea resort near The Hague.
JSC Today:
In the eight years of existence the JSC became a well established club with overseas guest flying in and out. Traditionally strong links with the Scheveningen Yacht club, The Amsterdam Yacht club and its fellows in Indonesia from the (much younger) Tanjung
Lesung Yacht club in West Jawa.
